Seven Deadly Sins Pulpit

The Roman Catholic parish church Reichenthal , also called Mühlviertel Cathedral , is located in the market town of Reichenthal in the Urfahr-Umgebung district in Upper Austria . The St. Bartholomew consecrated parish church belongs to the deanery Freistadt in the Diocese of Linz . The church is a listed building .

history

The old Romanesque / Gothic parish church was replaced by a new building between 1890 and 1894, the new church being built around the old one and then demolished.

architecture

The monumental hall church with a one-tower facade in neo-renaissance style was built from 1890 to 1894 according to a design by Raimund Jeblinger and represents a major work of late historicism in Upper Austria. The church is a three-bay wall pillar construction with added galleries and a retracted choir.

The Reichenthaler parish church is the largest church in the Mühlviertel and is also called Mühlviertel Cathedral because of its imposingness and size . It shares this name with the parish church in Niederkappel, which was also built by Jeblinger .

Furnishing

The church is furnished with neo-renaissance furnishings. The ceiling frescos are by Andreas Strickner from 1894. The high and side altars as well as the unique pulpit of the Seven Deadly Sins are by Ludwig Linzinger and were created in 1911. The pulpit is supported by a tree trunk, around which a giant serpent with seven human heads, symbolizing the seven deadly sins, winds.

The organ comes from Orgelbau Pirchner from 2008. The old organ was created by Franz Xaver Krismann in 1774 for the parish church of Steyr . In 1893, on the recommendation of Anton Bruckner , the case was separated from the instrument and brought from Steyr to Reichenthal.
