The Roman Catholic parish church Seeham is in the east of the town center on Obertrumer See in the municipality of Seeham in the Salzburg-Umgebung district in the state of Salzburg . The parish church consecrated to St. John the Baptist belongs to the deanery Köstendorf in the Archdiocese of Salzburg . The church is a listed building and is surrounded by a cemetery facing the lake.

history

A church was mentioned in documents in 1310 and 1342. A Gothic church was adopted from the 14th century, the chapel-like choir and west tower have been preserved. The church was originally incorporated into Mattsee Abbey and was elevated to a parish church in 1891. Due to subsidence and the resulting cracks in the nave, probably due to the proximity of the lake, the nave was aligned and extended to the south in 1931 according to the plans of the architect Otto Strohmayr while preserving the choir, the old sacristy and the west tower. At the same time, the new sacristy was added to the west of the new choir.

architecture

The nave, which is now facing south, closes with a retracted, rounded choir. The choir is lit from the lake through three arched windows on the east side. Hans Kern (1931) calls the wall painting Guardian Angel. The west tower of the previous church is a Gothic tower with a baroque octagonal tower from 1720 and has a bell helmet. At the north-east corner of the nave, the former Gothic choir with a triangular closure with a pointed arch window has been preserved.

The width of the new hall takes up the former length of the previous longhouse. The hall ceiling is a longitudinally axially stepped flat ceiling over massive cross members. The west wall contains pointed and round arched portals with anteroom, the east wall is open to the old Gothic choir. The strongly drawn-in triumphal arch makes the transition to the barrel-vaulted new choir. The glass painting Invocations and Promises of Christ was created by Hans Kern (1931).

In the former Gothic choir, the yoke and the five-eighth section in the vault have been preserved, the pilasters show Baroque changes, the floor shows slabs in red marble. The ceiling painting in the old choir shows the Sermon on the Mount by Josef Rattensperger (1854), the stained glass St. Maria and Joseph was created around 1900.

The former sacristy by the tower shows the ceiling painting of the Holy Family in a stucco frame around 1720 on the flat ceiling .

Furnishing

The side altars from 1931 by Jakob Adlhart surprisingly consist of cylindrical figure niches, the high altar takes up the round end of the choir undisguised. The high altar bears a baroque group of figures Baptism of Christ and contains the late baroque tabernacle. The side statues of St. Isidor and Notburga are from 1931. Above them, a figure of God the Father, probably by the sculptor Simeon Frieß, hovers from the former high altar from 1682.

The left side altar bears the carved figure of Maria Immaculata with child by Wolf Weißenkirchner the Younger (1685), the figure was transferred here from the high altar in Obereching. The right side altar bears the statue of Josef von Nazaret by Christina Pöschl (1937). The pulpit has a baroque angel on top. The Stations of the Cross are from the second and third quarters of the 19th century.

The old Gothic choir contains a classicistic columned retable altar from 1837 and shows the altar sheet Heiliger Wandel by Johann Georg Weibhauser (1837). The late Gothic polygonal font is made of red marble.

The organ was built by the Mauracher brothers (1932).
