The Roman Catholic parish church Stein im Jauntal in the municipality of Sankt Kanzian am Klopeiner See is consecrated to Saint Laurentius . With the remains of a castle, it towers impressively on a rock above the village. On the first Sunday in February, the custom of "Striezel throwing" is performed from the balcony of the sacristan's house.

history

The church has developed from the former castle chapel of a complex from the 12th or 13th century. In the course of the conflict between Emperor Friedrich III. and the Count of Gorizia for the inheritance of the Counts of Cilli , the castle was destroyed in 1458 and partially renewed after 1514. The castle was inhabited until the beginning of the 18th century. Most of it was removed in 1780.

In 1228 a blood miracle is said to have occurred at a mass . Stein was originally a branch of St. Kanzian and has been under the Eberndorf monastery since 1106 . In 1240 Stein was assigned to the Patriarch of Aquileja for the first time as a separate parish .

Church building

The outer walls of the nave and the round apse made of tuff come from the Romanesque church. In the Gothic period, the walls were reinforced inside by up to two and a half meters. The eaves cornice is Gothic. The slender, late Gothic north tower was built in 1511 as a defensive tower with loopholes. The pointed gable helmet of the tower comes from more recent times. Around 1855 Markus Pernhart had depicted the church with an onion helmet. On an engraving by Valvasors from 1688, the church can be seen with a pointed helmet. The western porch was added in the 19th century. In the southern outer wall, a side pilaster of a Roman tomb with an acanthus vine motif is walled in.

Inside, a retracted, Gothic triumphal arch connects the single-bay, square nave with the single-bay choir. The nave has an early Gothic ribbed vault, the choir with a five-eighth closure has a late Gothic ribbed vault on consoles. The polygon of the vault is inserted into the round apse. A late Gothic portal leads into the sacristy on the tower ground floor. Under the choir is a crypt with a Romanesque ridge vault on four late Gothic round pillars from the first half of the 16th century.

Murals

The remains of the high-quality wall paintings from the second half of the 13th century on the north wall of the crypt show standing saints. The flight to Egypt can be seen on the south wall of the nave to the right of the small round window, the paintings to the left of the window are no longer recognizable. The frescoes in the vault from the middle of the 14th century depict Majestas Domini , Marian Majestas, a mercy seat with evangelist symbols and Christ as the judge of the world .

Facility

The neo-baroque high altar with sacrificial portals was built in 1864. In the shrine there is the statue of St. Lawrence, flanked by the apostles Peter and Paul . Figures of Saint Gregory the Great on the left and Johannes Nepomuk on the right stand on the sacrificial passage portals . The top painting shows Mary with child.

The side altar was made in 1770. The focus is a group of figures with the blessed Hildegard von Stein and a kneeling beggar. Bones as relics of the saints rest in the base of the tower. Next to it are the statues of Saints Agatha and Dorothea . In the canteen of the altar there is a grave inscription for the slave Pussio, for Tertia and Boniata. The pulpit from the third quarter of the 18th century was taken in 1772.

Karner

The Karner is a Romanesque round building with a Gothic eaves cornice and a flat conical roof that is covered with stone slabs. The interior was redesigned in 1996 with a dance of death by Kiki Kogelnik .
