The parish church of Zeillern is located in the market town of Zeillern in the Amstetten district in Lower Austria . The St. The Roman Catholic parish church , consecrated to James the Elder , belongs to the Amstetten deanery in the diocese of St. Pölten . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

Zeillern was first mentioned in a deed of donation from Ludwig the German to the Niederaltaich monastery in 863. In 1140, the Passau bishop Reginbert von Hagenau left the Stephanshart parish with its Zidelaren branch to the chapter of Ardagger monastery. Due to the long and arduous journey of the vicar from the monastery to Zeillern, it was agreed with the chapter of the monastery and Pernhart von Sewsenegk ( Seisenegg ) in a document in 1462 that the vicar should from now on live in a building opposite the church in order to improve the pastoral care of the parish to be able to perceive. The reconstruction of the church in today's Gothic form took place between 1380 and 1460–1500. In 1510 a big bell was cast. In the 16th century, as in the neighboring town of Stephanshart, the parish temporarily became Protestant. From 1784, after the Abbey Ardagger was dissolved, the parish became independent. The last interior and exterior renovation of the parish church took place in 1992/93.

architecture

The church is a late Gothic staggered church under a steep pitched roof with a retracted choir in the 5/8 end . The medieval tower from the 14th century with a high wedge roof is presented to the west of the nave. The two-storey late Gothic sacristy is built into the southern corner of the choir. The church is entered through a small, barrel-vaulted porch in front of a simple stone portal from the 17th century. The interior of the three-aisled nave consists of a central nave and two unequal side aisles and is supported by four pillars. The central nave has a fifteenth-century diamond net vault on consoles. The left aisle is vaulted with net ribs with belt ribs from the same period. The chapel from the second half of the 14th century with a 5/8 end and ribbed vault with keystones was later extended to the right aisle with a groin and barrel vault . The two stained glass windows in the choir represent the Archangel Michael and St. Leopold and date from 1896.

Furnishing

Most of the neo-Gothic furnishings were created by Josef Kepplinger from 1889 onwards. The high altar with built-in tabernacle and rich veil carvings was also made in the Kepplinger joinery in 1896. The group of statues in the middle shows St. James the Elder on the way to execution. This group is flanked by the statues of St. Josef and Adalbert. About this is St. To see trinity.

The left side altar was created by Josef Schmalzl in 1901. The pulpit with evangelist reliefs and the statue of the risen Christ also dates from 1901.

The organ by Johann Lachmayr, housed in a neo-Gothic case, dates to 1906.

In the choir there is a high-quality Protestant wall tomb with the depiction of Cornelius Lappitz (died 1562) with women and children in front of a crucifix made almost entirely of plastic.
