The Pfeifferturm

The Pfeifferturm is the oldest building in the city of Eppingen in the Heilbronn district of Baden-Württemberg .

History and use

The tower, built in the first half of the 13th century, was built as part of the medieval city fortifications after Eppingen was in 1191/92 by the Hohenstaufen emperor Heinrich VI. was raised to imperial city . The tower was built in a central location, at the main gate to the old town. You can still see from the masonry on the south side that the gate was built here. The protruding console stones are remnants of the connecting passage between the city walls adjoining on both sides. The walled up arched door at the height of the corbels was the original entrance to the tower.

The tower has a roof top height of 30 meters and an eaves height of 22 meters; the viewing platform is at a height of 24 meters. The foundation stands on a square floor plan with a side length of 7 meters. The wall thickness is 2 meters on the first floor, 1.85 meters on the second and only 0.60 meters on the sixth. The tower consists of humpback blocks that were extracted from the local sandstone reed . The holes in the stones come from the grippers that were used to lift the stones to their final place during construction.

An apartment for the tower keeper was set up on the top floors of the Pfeifferturm . His job was to warn the residents of the city of enemies and if a fire broke out. The towers used to warn a horn, so they called him the piper , and the tower was as Pfeiffer tower called. Until 1830 the piper had to wind the clock placed on the tower.

The use of the Pfeifferturm as a prison was first recorded in 1662. After the Eppingen District Office was established, the Pfeifferturm was expanded into a prison for the district (1829 to 1859). In the course of this renovation, the clock room was dispensed with for reasons of space and the tower clock was moved to the newly built Eppinger town hall .

After 1859 the tower was used in various ways, and in 1935 the first local museum of the city of Eppingen was set up in it. After a renovation that became necessary in 2002, a branch of the Eppinger City Museum has been housed in the Pfeifferturm since 2003.
