The Pferdestraße is a main street in Jüterbog in Brandenburg , which begins at Dammtor and ends at the market. It is part of the federal highway 102 .

24 houses along the street are listed. A detailed list of the listed houses can be found in the list of architectural monuments in Jüterbog .

history

The street is mentioned as platea maior as early as the Middle Ages. What was meant was the entire street from Dammtor to Neumarkttor, today's Horse Street , and Große Straße . The name Pferdestraße is one of the oldest known street names in Jüterbog with the name Kleine Straße. The Jüterbogs horse markets took place in the western part of the street, which is why the name Horse Street became established over time.

The development increased strongly in the period from 1779 to 1806, many houses are from this time. In 1935 the street was renamed Wilhelm-Kube-Straße. Wilhelm Kube was the Upper President of Brandenburg-Berlin in 1935 . In 1936 Wilhelm Kube fell out of favor with Martin Bormann and was relieved of all state offices. In 1937, Grosse Strasse and Wilhelm-Kube-Strasse were merged to form Pferdestrasse. The houses were renumbered when they were renamed. The odd numbers began at the Dammtor on the north side of the street, the even numbers on the south side of the street also from the Dammtor.

In 1939 the entire street was renamed from Pferdestrasse to Grosse Strasse. On the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution , the street was renamed Lenin Street in 1967 after Lenin , the founder of the Soviet Union . In 1991 the street was renamed to Pferdestraße and Große Straße again, but the numbering of the houses was retained. The numbering of the horse street ends with the numbers 49 and 54, the numbering of the big street begins with 51 and 56.

Houses

At the beginning of the horse street, in the area of the dam gate, there used to be the Heilig-Geist-Hospital. For this reason the square is now called Holy Spirit Square. The church of the same name stood here until 1875; today there is a tree here.

The plots on Pferdestrasse are extensive, the southern plots extend as far as the Mauerweg in front of the city fortifications. Most of the houses were built as half-timbered houses in the 18th and 19th centuries . The houses were later given plastered facades. Under most of the houses there are medieval cellars. Most of the houses are eaves , but there are also gable houses (numbers 30, 36). From the end of the 19th century, rental houses were also built (number 19,31). After the Second World War there were also new buildings (numbers 29, 47).

Today the street is characterized by shops. The Hotel Bergschmidt was located at Pferdestrasse 26. At the house on Pferdestraße 39/41 there is a coat of arms that reminds of the Prince's Day in 1611. The Saxon councilors probably lived here. This meeting was about the Brandenburg-Saxon reconciliation and the Jülich-Kleve succession . The horse-drawn tram ran on the north side of the street from 1897 to 1928.
