The awl-leaved plantain ( Plantago subulata ) is a species of plantain ( Plantago ).
description
The awl-leaved plantain is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 5 to 20 centimeters. The trunk is small, woody and branched. It has dense rosettes of leaves. The leaves are 2.5 to 4 inches long, 1 to 2 millimeters wide, dark green, rigid, triangular and glabrous or ciliate. The ear stalks are only slightly longer than the leaves and straight or slightly curved. The flowers are inconspicuous. They are arranged in 1 to 5 centimeters long, rolled and dense ears. The four-lobed corolla tube is hairy on the outside.
The flowering period extends from May to August.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Occurrence
The awl-leaved plantain occurs in southern Europe, north-west Africa and the Middle East. The species grows on rocks near the coast. There are varieties in the mountains of Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily .
