Pfunds dairy is considered the most beautiful milk shop in the world and was included in the Guinness Book of Records in 1998. It is located at Bautzner Strasse 79 in Dresden and is one of the city's tourist attractions.

history

Paul Gustav Leander Pfund (1849–1923), a farmer from Reinholdshain , put the idea into action in 1879 of supplying Dresden with fresh and hygienically perfect milk and set up a shop on Görlitzer Straße, from whose sales room you can watch was able to see how the company's initial six cows were milked and the milk made ready for sale. In 1880 his brother, the actor Friedrich Pfund, also got into the business. From this point on, the company operated as the Dresdner Molkerei Gebrüder Pfund , although Friedrich died in 1883. Paul Pfund's sons Kurt and Max later worked in the company.

At first around 150 liters of milk were sold daily; In the 1930s around 60,000 liters were processed and sold into dairy products of all kinds every day.

The microbiologist and doctor Walther Hesse initiated the introduction of pasteurization in Pfunds dairy. Due to the overproduction of milk, Pfund was the first to produce condensed milk in Germany , which also guaranteed him a market abroad, and also sold products such as milk soap and baby food. Moreover were yoghurt beer and lemonade made from whey.

The first shop soon proved to be too small and the dairy moved to Bautzner Strasse 41. The company had to be expanded several times and set up a branch in Lobositz in Bohemia. Pfund maintained self-sufficiency in his business and set up not only animal breeding facilities, but also a cardboard box factory, a label and advertising printing shop , a wheelwright , a fitting for about 100 horses, a plumbing shop, a paint shop, and a tailoring shop and laundry for the uniforms of his employees . They were also able to move into their own company apartments and had a ballroom, a kindergarten and other facilities.

The company's representative main building at Bautzner Strasse 79 was built as early as 1891. The shop, which was completely clad with tiles in neo-renaissance style , which Villeroy & Boch had produced in collaboration with Dresden artists, was located below the office space . The shop survived the bombing during World War II. In 1972 it was nationalized by the GDR and closed in 1978. The old tradition was revived in the 1990s. Today, Pfund's former shop mainly sells raw milk cheese products, and there are also offers for visitors such as cheese tastings. At times there were plans to convert the dairy backyard into a Hundertwasser district .
