Phạm Gia Khiêm (born August 6, 1944 in Tu Liem, Hanoi ) is a Vietnamese politician of the Communist Party of Vietnam .

biography

After graduating he worked from 1968 to 1970 as a university professor ( lecturer ) for electrical engineering at the Bac Thai College operates. He then completed a degree in metallurgy in Czechoslovakia and received his doctorate there in 1975 for Ph.D. .

In the following years he rose within the government and was initially head of the industrial department in the Ministry of Planning and Investment in 1976. After working there as Deputy Head of the Science and Technology Department, he became Head of the Science, Education and Environment Department. Most recently, he was Vice Minister for Planning and Investments until 1996.

Phạm was Minister for Science, Technology and the Environment from November 1996 to September 1997. He has been Deputy Prime Minister since October 1997 and was also elected a member of the National Assembly and a member of the CPV Central Committee .

On June 28, 2006, he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs in the government of the new Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng . He also became a member of the Politburo of the CPV Central Committee .

In March 2007 he paid an official visit to the USA and met with exiled Vietnamese at the Consulate General in San Francisco . At the request of the then US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, he also assured that he would take care of the case of the imprisoned journalist and dissident Nguyễn Vũ Bình. In fact, on June 8, 2007, Nguyễn was released.
