Phalaenopsis bastianii is a kind from the family of orchids (Orchidaceae).
description
Vegetative characteristics
Phalaenopsis bastianii is a monopodial orchid that grows mainly epiphytically . Kindles often form on the plants. It has about 20 cm long and 6 cm wide, elliptical, green-yellow leaves .
Generative characteristics
The upright inflorescences become about 20 cm long and branch out quite often.
The flower does not give off any fragrance. The hermaphrodite, zygomorphic flowers are about 4 cm in size. The bracts have a green-yellow to light yellow basic color and are covered with dark red stripes. The flowers are colored purple in the middle, as with some hair -covered lip . The column is white in the area of the anther cap. After pollination , the bracts recede and turn green ( flower metamorphosis ).
A green, 6 to 7 cm long capsule fruit develops .
Occurrence
Specimens of Phalaenopsis bastianii have been found at altitudes of up to 500 meters in the Philippines .
Systematics and botanical history
Plant specimens of this species were brought to Europe in 1980 in what was first thought to be Phalaenopsis mariae .
In 1991 Phalaenopsis bastianii was first described by Olaf Gruss and Lutz Roellke. The specific epithet bastianii honors the son Bastian of the botanical co-author of this species, Lutz Roellke.
Has been described as the form Phalaenopsis bastianii f. flava in the Orchid Atlas 1991 by Olaf Gruss and Lutz Roellke. It is considered a synonym for Phalaenopsis bastianii by the botanists of the Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew) , London .
Similarity to other species
Phalaenopsis bastianii can be confused with Phalaenopsis maculata and Phalaenopsis mariae due to the great morphological similarity . Differences to Phalaenopsis mariae are much more difficult to determine. Eric A. Christenson writes of three key differentiators:
- an upright inflorescence in Phalaenopsis bastianii , in Phalaenopsis mariae a drooping one
- fewer trichomes on the middle lobe of the lip in Phalaenopsis bastianii
- fewer flowers in Phalaenopsis bastianii
