description

Vegetative characteristics

Phalaenopsis mariae grows monopodially , mainly as an epiphyte . It has a short stem axis . The 3 to 6 tongue-shaped to elliptical tapering dark green, not very fleshy leaves are up to 8 cm wide and 35 cm long.

Generative characteristics

On the relatively long and often branched inflorescences that hang down, several flowers usually form, which open at the same time. The flower smells slightly. The hermaphrodite flower is zygomorphic and 4 to 5 cm tall. The elliptical sepals (sepals) and somewhat smaller elliptical petals (petals) are slightly bent forward from the base when the flower is open. The basic color of the relatively fleshy flowers varies from white to milky white with longitudinal red spots of different sizes and accumulations of spots on the petals. Around the area of the scar there is a purple color of varying degrees. The lip is three-lobed and about 2 cm long, the callus crescent-shaped and covered by a few white hairs.

After pollination, the petals do not wither, instead they turn green until the capsule fruit is fully ripe .

In the article on Phalaenopsis bastianii there are distinguishing features, as these two species have great morphological similarities.

distribution

Phalaenopsis mariae is distributed in the Philippines and in the Sabah area of the island of Borneo at altitudes of 600 meters.

Botanical history

Illustration of Phalaenopsis mariae in The Orchid Album

Phalaenopsis mariae was found in the Sulu Archipelago in 1878 by FWT Burbidge, then director of the Botanical Gardens of Trinity College (Dublin) . Burbidge was traveling on behalf of Veitch and Sons . The plant was first described by Burbidge in Warner's and Williams' The Orchid album in 1883 .

Today, due to the similarity to Phalaenopsis bastianii and various crosses between the two species, it is difficult to obtain pure Phalaenopsis mariae in trade, which is why wild imports are still taking place, which seriously threaten the existence of the plants in their natural habitats.
