description

Vegetative characteristics

Phalaenopsis fimbriata grows as an epiphyte . There are three to six leaves on the short monopodial stem . The green, not very fleshy leaves are elongated-elliptical to oval and tapering to a point, with a length of around 25 centimeters and a width of up to 8 centimeters.

Generative characteristics

With a length of up to 27 centimeters, the relatively long and often branched, mostly downward-hanging inflorescence contains many flowers that open one after the other. The flowers give off a light aromatic scent. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic , about 5 centimeters tall and threefold. The three sepals are elliptical and tapered to a point. The three elliptical petals are often slightly twisted at the petal tip. The basic color of the waxy flowers varies from white, milky white to slightly greenish. There are small purple stripes on the petals around the area of the scar . The lip is three-lobed and about 16 millimeters long, the three-row callus is split. The anterior middle lobe of the lip is covered with many long trichomes .

After pollination, the bracts do not wither, instead they turn green until the capsule fruit is fully ripe .

Systematics

The first description of Phalaenopsis fimbriata was made in 1921 by Johannes Jacobus Smith in Bulletin du Jardin Botanique de Buitenzorg . The specific epithet fimbriata is derived from the Latin word fimbriatus for "fringed" and refers to the long trichomes on the lip .

Within the genus, Phalaenopsis fimbriata is classified by Christenson (2001) in the section Zebrinae from the subgenus Polychilos .
