Phạm Văn Đồng
Phạm Văn Đồng (pronunciation [fam va ̯ɨn doŋ] ; born March 1, 1906 in Đức Tân ; † April 29, 2000 in Hanoi ) was a Vietnamese freedom fighter and politician . He was Prime Minister of North Vietnam from 1955 to 1976 and Prime Minister of the reunified Vietnam from 1976 to 1987.
Life
In 1926 he joined the revolutionary Vietnamese youth movement of H Chí Minh as a student , which later became the Communist Party of Vietnam . 1929-1936 he was in French custody. After the revolution in August 1945 he was first finance minister, later deputy prime minister and foreign minister of North Vietnam, and finally prime minister in 1955. In May 1954 he headed the delegation of the Viet Minh to the Geneva Indochina Conference . During the Vietnam War he took part in peace negotiations with the governments of US Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon . After resigning for reasons of age in 1987, he repeatedly called on the party and government to fight rampant corruption.
