The work of art exists in and of itself. When painting nature, our desire is to create a picture that matches our experience as a painter of the elements of a natural scene. Therefore the painting is not a document of resemblance, but a game of artistic relationships and actions that enable us to understand nature. All relationships in nature have to be translated into prerequisites for the portrait (the airplane) and acquire an independent meaning there. A color exists on the canvas only through its contrast with other colors. Concepts for colors come from the expected play with each other, since colors that try to simulate nature do not fit in the dimension of an image .... "

- Jan Cybis in the magazine “Głos Plastyków”, 1931, no.12

From 1954 to 1966, Cybis noted his views on art and culture as well as the talent and abilities of an artist in notebooks, which were published in 1980 bound as Notes on Painting (“Notatki malarskie”) in Warsaw. His translation of Eugène Fromentin's work "Les Maîtres d'autrefois" (German: "The Old Masters") made an important contribution to art history . In 1955 he was awarded the 1st Class State Prize (Polish: "Nagrodę Państwową") for his achievements as a painter. In the same year he also received a medal for the 10th anniversary of the Republic of Poland (Polish: "Medal X-lecia Polski Ludowej").

In Cybis' work during his student days in Cracow, Cubist influences can be seen in some cases . He also found inspiration in the Polish mountain folklore (“Kompozycja” 1923, “Madonna” 1923). Later his art was significantly influenced by French post-impressionism , especially Paul Cézanne and Pierre Bonnard impressed him (“Ciotat” 1925, “Pejzaż z Collioure” 1926). After his return to Poland, the dark tones increasingly disappeared from his pictures ("Martwa natura z Gołąbkiem" 1931, "Kwiaty i Motyle" 1939), borrowing from the Kapists. Still lifes, landscapes and nudes were the main motifs (“Martwa natura z butelka w plecionce” 1948, “Nude” 1947, “Poranek w Starym Sączu” 1971/72).

The Jan Cybis Prize (Polish: "Nagroda im. Jana Cybisa"), named after Cybis, of the Warsaw District of the Association of Polish Visual Artists (ZPAP) has been awarded annually to one Polish painter since 1973. This honored Cybis' services to the association during the Second World War.
