Ignacy Pieńkowski

Ignacy Pieńkowski (born July 19, 1877 in Dołubowo , Podlaskie , † September 6, 1948 in Cracow ) was a Polish painter.

Life

Ignacy Pieńkowski was born on the family estate in Dołubowo, his parents were Ludwik and Wiktoria Pieńkowski. His brother was the physicist Stefan Pieńkowski . From 1892 to 1895 he was at the School of Painting in Warsaw by Wojciech Gerson trained. He later continued his studies at the Art Academy in Cracow under Teodor Axentowicz and Leon Wyczółkowski . In 1898 he moved to Paris , where he attended the Julian School and the Academie Colarossi . This was followed by stays in Munich and Rome and later trips to Germany, Russia and also Brazil.

From 1909 to 1913 he taught at the Warsaw Art Academy . In 1916 he organized an exhibition of Polish art in Moscow . In 1918 he was appointed to the Faculty of Painting at the Cracow Art Academy. He was a member of the artists' society “Sztuka” and the Association of Polish Visual Artists ZPAP . Pieńkowski's pictures were often shown at “Sztuka” events, and there were several solo exhibitions of his works, for example in 1925 in Curitiba, Brazil .

Pieńkowski painted in a variety of ways - portraits, still lifes , landscapes and religious motifs. In the beginning his pictures were dominated by symbolism . Later his work was strongly influenced by the currents of French post-impressionism . His students included Tadeusz Kantor , Stanisław Borysowski , Tadeusz Brzozowski , Jan Cybis , Józef Gaczyński and Stefan Maciej Makarewicz . Pieńkowski's paintings are in the possession of the National Museums in Warsaw and Cracow and the Podlaskie Museum (Polish: “Muzeum Podlaskie”) in Białystok . In the Agricultural Museum (Polish: "Muzeum Rolnictwa") in Ciechanowiec there is a permanent exhibition on the artist.
