Stanislaw Borysowski

Stanisław Borysowski (born January 2, 1906 in Lviv , † May 1, 1988 in Toruń ) was a Polish painter, graphic artist and draftsman. For many years he was the head of the painting faculty at today's Akademia Sztuk Pięknych in Gdansk .

Life

Borysowski studied from 1926 to 1933 in Kraków at the Akademia Sztuk Pięknych under Władysław Jarocki , Ignacy Pieńkowski , Jan Wojnarski , Stanisław Kamocki and Tadeusz Axentowicz . During his stay at the Paris branch of the Cracow Academy in 1934 and 1935, he learned from Józef Pankiewicz . Before the outbreak of the Second World War he was a member of Towarzystwa Artystów Polskich "Sztuka" .

Also before the war he began working as a teacher trainer at the Krzemieniecer High School. From 1945 he worked as an assistant at the Cracow Academy. In 1946 he was appointed professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Toruń . From 1949 to 1951 he headed the faculty as dean . From 1953 he taught at the Faculty of Painting of the State University of Fine Arts "PWSSP" (today: Akademia Sztuk Pięknych w Gdańsku ) in Gdansk. He stayed here until 1972, from 1955 to 1964 as dean. In 1958 he was a co-founder of the artists' association "Grupa Toruńska".

Borysowski mainly painted landscapes, still lifes , portraits and figural scenes. His style developed over time from initially natural and soft forms over a cubist period to a very contoured form of representation. Influenced by Polish colorism before the war , Borysowski later turned to socialist realism , post-cubism and various forms of abstract art . He also worked as a graphic artist. Multiple his works were shown abroad, 1933 at the exhibition of Polish art in Moscow in 1934 at the Biennale in Venice , 1937 at the World Exhibition in Paris , where Borysowski received a silver medal and 1939 at the New York World's Fair . In Poland it was exhibited in the National Museum in Warsaw (1961). Posthumously solo exhibitions were held for him in Bydgoszcz , Danzig and Toruń . His works are in the possession of the National Museums in Gdansk , Cracow and Warsaw and the Regional Museum in Toruń.
