Jan Chrzan (born May 25, 1905 in Piaseczno ; † April 21, 1993 in Warsaw ) was a Polish landscape painter and art activist.

Life

After training at Konrad Krzyżanowski's private painting and drawing school , Chrzan studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1930 under Professors Mieczysław Kotarbiński and Tadeusz Pruszkowski .

During the Second World War , his Warsaw apartment burned down and all pre-war works in it were destroyed. Chrzan joined the fighting Polish units in the city center when the Warsaw Uprising broke out and, on the instructions of the Delegatura Rządu na Kraj, also headed the department for the protection / securing of cultural assets in the northern part of the city. Together with Stanisław Lorentz and Jan Cybis , he organized the rescue of art treasures from the Warsaw National Museum and the Warsaw Royal Castle .

Chrzan has always been very active in organizing and promoting Polish art. In 1957, for example, he created the Salon Plastyki Współczesnej “Art” exhibition space on Krakowskie Przedmieście Street in Warsaw (diagonally across from the Bristol Hotel ) for the Association of Polish Visual Artists , which he was artistic director for 18 years. In the 1960s and 1970s he organized the Warsaw art sale (Polish: "Warszawskie Kiermasze Sztuki") at the rebuilt Warsaw Barbican . In 1980 Chrzan was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta .

Chrzan painted with oil and gouache techniques. Most of the artist's works include landscapes and cityscapes (especially of Warsaw). He also painted nudes and still lifes . His style with a realistic basis and expressive design follows the tradition of Polish colorism with sometimes strong impressionistic accents.

Chrzan's works have been shown several times at domestic and foreign exhibitions. Much of his work has been bought by Polish institutions. Around 200 pictures of the Warsaw Uprising , which were created from the perspective of an artist and active fighter, are remarkable . The majority of these paintings are now in the Warsaw Rising Museum .
