Stanisław Lorentz (born April 28, 1899 in Radom , † March 15, 1991 in Warsaw ), code name "Bukowski", was a Polish musicologist, museologist and art historian.

Life

Lorentz passed the Matura examination at the Gimnazjum Górskiego in Warsaw and then studied at the philosophical faculty of the University of Warsaw . He completed his studies with a doctorate in 1924, and his dissertation was on Ephraim Schröger . In 1929 he moved to Vilna, which was then Polish . He first worked as a high school teacher, then as a civil servant monument protection expert and from 1935 headed the National Museum in Warsaw . During the German occupation he belonged to the Polish underground movement and tried to preserve Polish cultural heritage by documenting the art treasures stolen by the occupiers. After the war he was again director of the museum, from 1947 professor at Warsaw University, member of the Sejm (1965–1969), the Polish Academy of Knowledge (from 1949) and the Polish Academy of Sciences (from 1952) as well as numerous commissions. He developed special activities as a UNESCO expert on Polish cultural heritage and as a propagator for the reconstruction of the Warsaw Royal Castle .

Lorentz is buried in the Protestant cemetery of the Augsburg Confession .

In 1973 he was awarded the City of Kiel's Culture Prize.
