The municipality of Huatajata is a district in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia . It was part of the Municipio Achacachi until its creation by Law 1040 / 03-04 of June 28, 2010 . When it was re-established, the municipality consisted of the previous canton of Huatajata and a strip of land about one kilometer wide, which was added to the municipality of Huatajata from the eastern edge of the previous cantons of Chua Cocani and Soncachi.

Location in the vicinity

The Municipio Huatajata is one of six ( until 2005: two / until 2009: three / until 2010: four ) Municipios of the province of Omasuyos and is located in the southern part of the province. It is bordered by the Chua Cocani municipality to the west , Lake Titicaca to the south , and the Huarina municipality to the east .

The municipality extends between about 16 ° 10 'and 16 ° 13' southern latitude and 68 ° 38 '30 "and 68 ° 43' 30" west longitude, it measures from north to south up to five kilometers, from west to east to to six kilometers. The municipality has twelve localities ( localidades ), the central place of the municipality is the village Huatajata with 293 inhabitants in the southwestern part of the district, the largest village is Soncachi Chico with 602 inhabitants. The municipality of Huatajata is located on the Bolivian Altiplano on the east bank of Lake Titicaca at an average altitude of 3900  m . The region lies between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east. The climate in the Huatajata area is derived from the altitude on the Altiplano and the proximity to the large water surface of Lake Titicaca, which mitigates the temperature fluctuations.

The annual average temperature is 11 ° C (see climate diagram Achacachi), with the monthly average in the coldest month (July) at 8 ° C only slightly deviating from the warmest month (November to March) at 12 ° C. The climate is arid from June to August with only sporadic rainfall, and it is humid in the summer months, especially from December to March, with monthly rainfall of more than 100 mm.
