The municipality of Chua Cocani (also: Chúa Cocani ) is a district in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia . It was part of the Municipio Achacachi until its creation by Law 1040 / 03-04 of June 28, 2010 . It is made up of the three cantons Chúa Cocani, Chuavisalaya (also ' Chua Visalaya ) and Soncachi Grande. A strip of land about one kilometer wide on the eastern edge of the cantons of Chua Cocani and Soncachi was added to the newly founded Municipio Huatajata when it was re-established.
Location in the vicinity
The municipality Chua Cocani is one of six ( until 2005: two / until 2009: three / until 2010: four ) Municipios of the province of Omasuyos and is located in the southern part of the province. It borders on the municipality of Achacachi in the northeast, north and west, on Lake Titicaca in the southwest , on the municipality of Huatajata in the southeast and on the municipality of Huarina in the east .
The municipality has 42 localities ( localidades ), the central place of the municipality is the village of Chua Cocani with 907 inhabitants in the southern part of the district. ( 2012 census )
geography
The municipality of Chua Cocani is located on the Bolivian Altiplano on the east bank of Lake Titicaca at an average altitude of 3900 m . The region lies between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east. The climate in the Chúa Cocani area is derived from the altitude on the Altiplano and the proximity to the large water surface of Lake Titicaca, which mitigates temperature fluctuations.
The annual average temperature is 11 ° C (see climate diagram Achacachi), with the monthly average in the coldest month (July) at 8 ° C only slightly deviating from the warmest month (November to March) at 12 ° C. The climate is arid from June to August with only sporadic rainfall, and it is humid in the summer months, especially from December to March, with monthly rainfall of more than 100 mm. The annual precipitation is around 600 mm.

The municipality of Achacachi / Huarani / Santiago de Huata / Chua Cocani / Huatajata had a population density of 66 inhabitants / km² at the last census in 2001 , the life expectancy of newborns was 59.4 years, and the infant mortality rate was 7.9 percent ( 1992) fell slightly to 7.6 percent in 2001.
The literacy rate among those over 19 was 71.0 percent, namely 86.8 percent for men and 57.0 percent for women (2001) .
66.5 percent of the population in the former municipality of Achacachi spoke Spanish , 94.1 percent spoke Aymara , and 0.2 percent spoke Quechua . (2001)
