Stefan Pieńkowski (born July 28, 1883 in Młynów ; † November 20, 1953 in Warsaw ) was a Polish experimental physicist. Until his death in 1921 he was director of the Institute for Experimental Physics at the University of Warsaw . As the founder of a school of experimental physicists in Warsaw, he had a great influence on the development of Polish physics.

Life

Pienkowski initially studied in Liège with the aim of becoming an engineer, but then switched to physics with a doctorate in 1911. He then worked with Philipp Lenard in Heidelberg . In 1919 he returned to Warsaw and became professor of experimental physics at the university. 1925/26, 1933 to 1936 and 1945 to 1947 he was rector of the university and during the German occupation in the underground university .

He dealt with X-ray structure analysis , radioactivity , photoluminescence and the Raman effect . He wrote a well-known in Poland textbook on experimental physics ( Fizyka Doświadczalna ).

He was the first editor of the journal Progress in Physics (Postępy Fizyki) and one of the founders of the Polish Physical Society . Pienkowski was a member of the Polish Academy of Learning and from 1952 the Polish Academy of Sciences . In 1949 he was awarded the Order of the Banner of Labor ( Order Sztandaru Pracy ) and posthumously became the commander of the Order of Polonia Restituta .
