Phantasy Star Universe (OT: Japanese フ ァ ン タ シ ー ス タ ー ユ ニ バ ー ス , Fantashī Sutā Yunibāsu ) is a computer game from the role-playing game series Phantasy Star . Phantasy Star Universe ( PSU for short ) was developed by Sega's Sonic Team and was released in the fourth quarter of 2006 on Xbox 360 , PlayStation 2 and Windows . Just like Phantasy Star Online , Phantasy Star Universe can also be played online.

Backstory

The action takes place in the Gurhal system, an alien universe with three planets. Each of these planets impresses with its unique culture, which was influenced by the races that live there.

In the past, there have been repeated conflicts between the races (humans, CASTs, Newmans and BEASTs). But after the last great battle, peace came and the Alliance army was formed. During the Gurhal System Alliance centenary ceremony, the army is attacked by an unknown alien race, the SEED. The Alliance Army does not come alone against this enemy and asks the GUARDIANS for help. The GUARDIANS are a private security army and are looking for recruits. One of these recruits is Ethan Waber, a 17 year old. He witnessed the SEED attack during the ceremony and almost lost his sister Lumia in the process. The player takes on the role of Ethan.

Game modes

There are three game modes. If you play with the PC version, an internet connection is required for all modes. The characters can only be used in the mode in which they were created.

  • Story mode (offline): The player takes on the role of Ethan Waber. You advance the story in 12 chapters. You can also accept free missions.
  • Extra mode (offline): The player creates his own character and can accept free missions. The extra mode is only activated during the course of the story mode.
  • Network mode (online): The player creates his own character and can accept free missions, trade and chat with other players over the Internet.

Since December 8th, 2006 the story (from chapter 13) has been continued in network mode. There are therefore also new missions available, which are linked to the missions of the story mode and are continued.

The overall goal is the same in all game modes: save the Gurhal system by destroying the SEED.

Due to the low number of subscribers, all servers for the PC and PlayStation 2 versions will be closed from March 31, 2010. The servers for the XBox 360 version were then closed on September 7, 2012.

Game flow

In the extra or network mode, the player can create his own character. He can choose from four races. There are three main classes: Hunter, Ranger, and Force. Hunter are particularly suitable for close combat, Ranger for combat with long-range weapons and Force for combat with Technics (magic). In the course of the game you can change classes as often as you like.

As a player you start in your own quarters in the GUARDIANS colony. From the colony you can travel to the three planets (Parum, Neudaiz, Moatoob) in the course of the game. In the capitals of the planets and the GUARDIANS colony, there are various shops that sell weapons, armor, clothing, furnishings and more. You can also accept free missions from the capitals (in story mode you can also continue the actual background story).

In the story or extra mode you can carry out the missions with up to three other characters as a team. In network mode, a maximum of five other players can join. The missions are carried out in instanced areas. There you fight against monsters (in story mode also against enemy NPCs ). When all monsters have been eliminated from one area, you can advance to the next area. The opponents can drop money or objects. By killing enemies, players also receive experience points that allow them to level up. The status values of the character are improved by increasing the level.

Own quarters

Each player gets their own room in the GUARDIANS colony. There you can save the game status (story or extra mode), change your clothes and use the videophone. The room also has its own partner bot. This can store its own items and money (mesetas). In addition, the partner bot can produce items from raw materials. In network mode, other players can visit their own quarters and buy items there that are offered for sale.

communication

In network mode you can chat with other players . The written text is displayed in speech bubbles above the own character. In addition to the speech bubble, you can also optionally display your character's face. You can choose from different emotional situations and perspectives.

There is team chat and general chat. The team chat can only be read by the team members. General chat is only possible in cities. All players present can read and chat there.

Players of the XBOX360 version can also use the headset supplied with the console to chat in quarters and within groups via voice chat.

There is also a personal messaging system. You can only send a message to a player if you also have your partner card.

The characters are also able to perform emotes .

Monthly charges

To be able to play in network mode you need a so called GUARDIANS license, which you can get on PlaySega.com. There is a monthly fee for this license.

PC and PS2 version players can play together in network mode. Xbox 360 version players keep to themselves.
