The Kammtrogon ( Pharomachrus antisianus , Syn. : Trogon antisianus ), one within the family of trogons (Trogonidae) to the genus of Pharomachrus .

The bird is found in Bolivia , Ecuador , Colombia , Peru, and Venezuela .

The range includes tropical or subtropical moist mountain forest , cloud and cloud forest , forest edges and occasionally high secondary forest from 1400 to 2800 m in Colombia and from 1200 to 3000 m in Venezuela. It is often found together with the gold headed trough ( Pharomachrus auriceps ).

The Latin additional species comes from Antis, Latinized name for the Andes .

The bird is 33 to 34 cm tall. The male has an orange-yellow beak, a metallic-green head with a short crest, the only representative of this genus, and a red iris . The plumage is metallic emerald green, the underbust to the under tail covers is red. The wing and tail coverts protrude about 2.5 cm above the tail, the outer control feathers are white. Compared to the quetzal ( Paromachrus mocinno ), the comb is not hair-like, so that the head is less noticeable. The female has a blackish to yellow beak, the head is gray-brown with almost no crest, the breast brown, the underside of the tail dark with whitish-striped control feathers, in this respect very similar to the quetzal female, only the head is darker and the tail slightly shorter.

The species is monotypical .

Way of life

This species is usually found in the middle of the tree up to the top of the tree. The diet consists of fruits and berries, but also insects , frogs and lizards .

The breeding season is between February and June.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
