Phedimus aizoon (Syn .: Sedum aizoon L. ) is a species of the genus Phedimus in the family of thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae). It is also called thick-leaf stonecrop in German.
features
Phedimus aizoon is a perennial succulent plant with a tuber rhizome , which usually reaches heights of 30 to 40, rarely from 20 centimeters. The mostly alternate and not heart-shaped stem encompassing leaves are egg-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, the base is narrowed. They are often sawn towards the tip, 5 to 8 inches long and about 2 inches wide.
The flowers are radial symmetry . The petals are yellow. The flowering period extends from July to August.
The chromosome number is 2n = 30–34, 56, 48, 61, 63, 64, 78, 80, 84, 85, 88, 93–97 or 102.
Occurrence
Phedimus aizoon occurs in Siberia, Mongolia, China and Japan in dry places, bushes, meadows, rocky brook banks and sandy cliffs. But it is naturalized in places in northern, northeastern and central Europe.
use
Phedimus aizoon is widely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens and perennial beds. It has been in culture since 1757 at the latest.
There are several types (selection):
- 'Aurantiacum': the stems are dark red, the buds are red and the crown is yellow-orange
- 'Euphorbioides': the crown is dark yellow
