Phelsuma borbonica , (French: Gecko vert des Hauts (German: Green mountain gecko )) is a small species of lizard from the gecko family(Geckonidae).
features
The upper side of the body is colored turquoise to grass green and has a light stripe on the back. Irregular red spots can be seen on the middle of the back and on the top of the tail, some of which form horizontal stripes. The flanks are darker green in color and also spotted red and the underside of the body is greenish gray. The species reaches a length between 12 and 17 cm.
distribution
The species is distributed in the western Indian Ocean . Phelsuma borbonica borbonica is endemic to the island of Reunion . It occurs exclusively in the heights of the communities in the northeast of the island between St.Denis and Ste.Rose . Phelsuma borbonica mater lives in a few places on the southern tip of the island of Réunion. Phelsuma borbonica agalegae occurs on Agalega . On Réunion, forest areas are settled at altitudes above 150 m above sea level. Some sources also speak of an endemic distribution on Réunion for the species as a whole.
Way of life
Phelsuma borbonica feeds on insects (butterflies, termites, flies), as well as on pollen, nectar and ripe fruits. The species leads a tree-climbing way of life. Both males and females are territorial. Phelsuma borbonica borbonica is very nervous and quickly takes flight when disturbed.
Reproduction
Reproduction takes place in spring and summer. The eggs are laid in pairs under stones or bark. A female lays up to four pairs of eggs. The incubation period for the eggs is between two and three months at 26 ° C.

Protection status
All subspecies of Phelsuma borbonica have been on the CITES II list since February 4th, 1977.
