Phil Darois

Phillip N. "Phil" Darois (born February 23, 1919 in Lynn ; † February 21, 2013 in New Orleans ) was an American bassist and tuba player who was active in the New Orleans jazz scene.

Darois grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and played in local combos in the Boston area early in his career . After completing his military service, in which he played in an army band, he moved to New Orleans, where he studied at Loyola University. There he played his 77-year career with numerous brass bands , dance and symphony orchestras, etc. a. also with Leon Prima , Louis Prima , Al Hirt and Pete Fountain . With the Peter Toma Orchestra he had a longer engagement at the Roosevelt Hotel. In the 1960s he was seen in a Columbia Pictures documentary about New Orleans. In the field of jazz, Darois, who played the double bass and tuba as well as the electric bass, took part in 25 recording sessions between 1953 and 1997. a. also with Johnny Wiggs , Santo Pecora , Armand Hug ( Plays AJ Piron & Other Delectable Ditties ), Monk Hazel and Raymond Burke ( Crescent City Music ).
