Philibert de Rye (* around 1516 ; † June 17, 1556 in La Tour-du-Meix ) was bishop of Geneva from 1550 to 1556 .

Life

Philibert came from a noble family from the Franche-Comté , he was the son of Simon, Seigneur de Rye , Balançon and Dicey , and Antoinette de La Baume, a daughter of Guy, Count of Montrevel. The Cardinal Pierre de La Baume was a brother of his mother, Louis de Rye , Philibert's predecessor as Bishop of Geneva, was his brother, the Archbishop of Besançon , Ferdinand de Rye , was his nephew.

On March 5, 1550 he was appointed coadjutor with successor rights to his brother, the Geneva Bishop Louis de Rye. The right of succession included the diocese of Geneva, the abbeys of Acey and Saint-Claude and the priory of the Cluniac monastery of Gigny . After the death of Louis de Rye on August 25, 1550, he succeeded him. He did not reside in his diocese - Geneva had become Calvinist - but settled in Annecy in 1569 . The Mandement (rule) Thiez , which had been occupied by France since 1539 , was returned to him in 1556, while neither Philibert nor his successors could win back the Mandements Penney and Jussy, which had also been lost.

Philibert de Rye died on June 17, 1556 in the castle of La Tour-du-Meix and was buried in the parish church of Saint-Christophe.
