Louis de Rye (around 1501 - 25 August 1550 ) was Bishop of Geneva from 1543 to 1550 .

Life

Louis came from a noble family from Franche-Comté , he was the son of Simon, Seigneur de Rye , Balançon and Dicey and Antoinette de La Baume, a daughter of Guy, Count of Montrevel. The Cardinal Pierre de La Baume was a brother of his mother, Philibert de Rye the successor of Louis as Bishop of Geneva was his brother, the Archbishop of Besançon Ferdinand de Rye was his nephew.

Louis became abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Auberive in 1528 , prior of the Cluniac monastery in Gigny in 1542 , and from the end of 1545 he was abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Acey . Philipp de La Baume renounced the diocese of Geneva in 1543, followed by his nephew Louis, who also became abbot of Saint-Claude . After the death of Pierre de La Baume, the cathedral chapter - which now resided in Annecy after a stopover in Rumilly - elected François II, Viscount of Luxembourg-Martigny as bishop in 1544, the election was rejected by the Pope because François was not a clergyman.

Louis did not reside in Annecy, but stayed in his monasteries in Saint-Claude and Gigny. An attempt to return to Geneva with the support of Emperor Charles V failed. In 1549 he donated a chapel in Thervay .

Louis died on August 25, 1550, his body was buried in Thervay, his heart in Acey Monastery.
