Pierre de La Baume

Pierre de La Baume (* around 1477 in Montrevel-en-Bresse ; † May 4, 1544 in Arbois ) was bishop of Geneva from 1522 to 1543 , archbishop of Besançon from 1541 to 1543 and cardinal from 1539 .

Life

Pierre belonged to the noble family La Baume-Montrevel , who came from Bresse . His parents were Guy de La Baume, Count of Montrevel and Jeanne de Longwy. The Cardinal Claude de La Baume and Archbishop of Besançon was Pierre's nephew.

He studied at Dole University and was awarded a doctorate in theology in 1502. He was a canon and archdeacon in Aix-en-Provence and a canon in Lyon. He had the honorary title of Apostolic Protonotary and was Abbot of Saint-Claude and San Giusto in Susa . He was adviser to Duke Charles III. of Savoy and Delegate of Savoy to the Lateran Council .

When the Geneva bishop Johann von Savoyen withdrew to Pinerolo in 1520 for health reasons , Pierre became coadjutor with succession rights and administrator of the diocese of Geneva. He followed Johannes' death in 1522 as Bishop of Geneva. In 1530 he became coadjutor with successor rights to the Archbishop of Besançon Antoine de Vergy . He did not intervene in the disputes between the citizens of Geneva and the Duke of Savoy, which led to an alienation of his subjects. He rarely stayed in Geneva, during which time the ideas of the Reformation began to spread in the city. Pope Paul III appointed him cardinal on December 19, 1539, on November 21, 1541 he became a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Giovanni e Paolo . After the death of Antoine de Vergy, Pierre followed on November 21, 1541 as Archbishop of Besançon. In 1543 he resigned as Bishop of Geneva and Archbishop of Besançon, where he was followed by his nephew Claude de La Baume .

Pierre de La Baume died on May 4, 1544 in Arbois and was buried there in the Saint-Just church.
