John of Savoy († February 7, 1522 in Pinerolo ) was Bishop of Geneva from 1513 to 1522 .

Life

Johann was the illegitimate son of Francis of Savoy , Bishop of Geneva from 1484 to 1490. He was Apostolic Protonotary , Commendatar Abbot in Pinerolo , Prior of Sillingy and Canon in Turin . From 1507 to 1508, during his uncle Philip of Savoy's Epsikopat , he was Vicar General in Geneva.

After the death of Charles de Seyssel , the Geneva cathedral chapter elected the Geneva canon Aymon de Gingins as bishop on April 12 or 13, 1513 . Pope Leo X refused to confirm and appointed, at the request of Duke Charles III. of Savoy, instead Johann became Bishop of Geneva on July 15, 1513. In 1514 he was a member of the Savoy embassy at the wedding of Claude de France to the future King Francis I of France . In 1515 he left Charles III. of Savoy the secular rule over Geneva , but this was not confirmed by the College of Cardinals.

In the spring of 1520 he retired to the Pinerolo Abbey due to illness. He designated Pierre de La Baume as coadjutor with succession rights and administrator of the diocese of Geneva. He died on February 7, 1522 in Pinerolo and was buried there in the Saint-Luce chapel in the Notre-Dame abbey church, which he donated.
