Phil Chess
Philip Chess (* March 27, 1921 as Fiszel Czyż in Motal , Poland , today Breszkaja Woblasz , Belarus ; † October 18, 2016 in Tucson , Arizona ) was a Polish-American record producer and, together with his brother Leonard, founder of Chess Records .
Life
In 1928 he followed his father to Chicago with his mother, sister Malka and brother Lejzor . Here her family name changed to Chess; Lejzor became Leonard and Fiszel became Philip.
After he left the army in 1946, he and his brother ran several clubs, the most important of which was the Macomba Lounge. Two years later Leonard became a partner in the Chicago record company Aristocrat Records , and in 1950 Phil also became a partner; the brothers took over the company and renamed it Chess Records. Phil Chess was actively involved as a producer in the production of the successful Chess albums. In 1968 the company was sold to GRT and Phil retired to Arizona to retire.
In 1995 Phil Chess was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame with his brother .
Shiloh Fernandez plays Phil Chess in the film Cadillac Records , which tells the story of Chess Records .
