Philip Freier (born February 9, 1955 in Brisbane , Queensland ) is an Australian Anglican Archbishop and head of the Anglican Church of Australia since 2014 .

Life

Freer studied education and theology at James Cook University and the University of Newcastle . At first, Freier worked as a teacher. In 1983 he was ordained an Anglican priest. He became a curator in Kowanyama , Queensland and was then rector of St Oswald's Banyo for five years and then rector of Christ Church Bundaberg . In 1999 he became Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Northern Territory . Freier was elected Archbishop of the Diocese of Melbourne in 2006 to succeed Peter Watson and has been Head of the Anglican Church of Australia since 2014, succeeding Phillip Aspinall . Freier is married and has two children. He lives with his family in Melbourne .
