Pettit is known for his variant of Republicanism . His book Republicanism: A Theory of Freedom and Government served as the theoretical foundation for political reforms in Spain by the government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero . Pettit, together with José Luis Marti, described his relationship with Zapatero in A Political Philosophy in Public Life: Civic Republicanism in Zapatero's Spain .
Pettit believes that thinking about philosophical problems in one area often leads to useful solutions to problems in entirely different areas. Thus standpoints which he takes in the field of philosophy of mind are conducive to his approaches to solving problems in metaphysics on the question of free will and problems of social philosophy; the latter in turn help him to find solutions to problems of moral philosophy and political philosophy.
Pettit is a member of the staff of scientific advisors at Fundacion IDEAS , the think tank of the Spanish Socialist Party.
