Philip Sugden

Philip Sugden (born January 27, 1947 in Kingston upon Hull , † April 26, 2014 ) was a British historian and author . He gained particular fame through his publications about the alleged serial killer Jack the Ripper .

Live and act

Philip Sugden grew up with his twin brother in Hull. His father was a painter and interior decorator. After graduating from high school , he worked for the city park administration before studying history at Hull College of Commerce. From 1972 to 1976 he prepared at the University of Hull with lectures in history for his dissertation , which he did not complete. During his time teaching history, English and economics at a school in Cannock between 1976 and 1998, his interest in the Georgian era of English history and in the history of crime in the 18th century grew.

In 1988 he retired from school and shifted his work to writing books. After nine years of development, he published his first book in 1994, entitled The Complete History of Jack the Ripper . The book was a huge hit and sold 100,000 copies. For the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography he wrote the articles about the robber Jack Sheppard and the bigamist and murderer George Joseph Smith .

Sugden was single and died of a cerebral haemorrhage in April 2014 . With his death, two of his works remained unfinished.
