Philipp Christoph Schickhard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philipp Christoph Schickhard (* around 1581 in Siegen ; † before 1672 ibid) was court master of the Keppel monastery , as well as council relative and mayor of Siegen.

Life

Philipp Christoph Schickhard was the youngest son of Henrich Schickhartt . He learned - just like his brother Martin - first at the Latin school and from 1594 on the pedagogy in Siegen. From 1599 he studied law at the high school in Herborn .

In 1601 he married an Elßbeth Scheffer. With her he had at least one son. In 1606 he replaced his father as court master of the Keppel monastery. His duties included external management, especially the administration of the monastery property. He was also responsible for the renewal of the tenure every six years. From this description, but above all because of the amount of his remuneration, it is clear that this was a sideline. In the first year of his activity he received 5 fl for Ungelt, 10 fl for clothing, as well as 8 mltr. Grain, 6 mltr. Oats and 4 mltr. Wood. What Philipp Christoph Schickhard did full-time is not recorded. In any case, since 1616 he was also a member of the council and since 1618 city aldermen. After Siegen was taken by the Catholic League in 1626 , he lost these offices and because of the progressive recatholization he fled to Count Ludwig Heinrich von Nassau-Dillenburg in 1627 . Since he could not find permanent asylum there, he returned to Siegen in 1628.

In 1633 he was elected the ruling junior mayor and in 1645, 1647, 1650, 1654 and 1659 he was elected the ruling senior mayor. At the beginning of the 1640s he married his second, significantly younger wife, Margarethe, with whom he also had at least one son.

In 1650 the Nuremberg Reich Commission restituted the Keppel monastery. Abbess again became Maria Effern, who already exercised this function before the dissolution. She called Philipp Christoph Schickhard back to the court master and he exercised this office again in the years 1651-1660. Philipp Christoph Schickhard owned a house and stables in Hundgasse . What he did after 1660 and when he died is not known. This had to be done before 1672, because his widow married again and was called Schwartz from then on.
