Aegidius Schickhard

Aegidius Schickhard (* 1601 or 1602 in Siegen ; † after 1650 probably in Oppenheim ) was a law professor and principal at the High School in Herborn .

Life

Aegidius Schickhard was the older son of Philipp Christoph Schickhard . He learned from 1609 on the pedagogy in Herborn. He then studied law: from 1617 at the High School in Herborn and at the University of Marburg , from 1619 again in Herborn, from 1623 in Leiden and 1626 in Strasbourg . During his studies he accompanied Count Georg Friedrich and Wilhelm Otto on their business trips in 1623 .

Immediately after his studies he worked as a lawyer from 1626/27, at the latest from 1629 in Speyer. At this point he was in contact with Wilhelm Schickard by letter . In the same year he was appointed professor in Herborn. He himself had great doubts whether he should accept this offer. Wilhelm Schickard's advice certainly played an important role in his decision. In Herborn, Schickhard first read ethics and later law. It was at this time that many previous professors - including his uncle Martin Schickhard the Elder - left Herborn. In 1634 he became rector and held this office until 1637, that is, three times in a row, as there was no colleague willing to take it on.

In 1639 at the latest, Egidius Schickhard left the university and until 1647 he was in Hohenlimburg as an advisor to Countess Johannetta Elisabeth von Bentheim , née. from Nassau-Katzenelnbogen. From 1650 he was in Oppenheim, where his wife owned hereditary estates.

Aegidius Schickhard had at least one son, Johann Henrich Schickhard, born in Herborn, who studied law in the Netherlands, in Leiden and Franeker .
