Philipp Herrmann (born August 18, 1899 in Karlsruhe , † September 19, 1968 there ) was a German painter and restorer .

Life

Philipp Herrmann - not to be confused with Philipp Ludwig Herrmann - was born on August 18, 1899 in Karlsruhe. At the age of 16 he left grammar school with the primary school leaving certificate and after passing the entrance examination received a place at the Karlsruhe Academy . There he studied with Walter Georgi and, after his service in the First World War, with Friedrich Fehr and Walter Conz .

In October 1920 he moved to the Munich Academy , where he became one of Hugo von Habermann's last master students . In the summer of 1925 he went to Paris for a year; At the end of 1926 he moved back to Karlsruhe.

Since then he has been represented in the exhibitions of the Badischer Kunstverein .

Herrmann's special talent lay in portraits , landscape painting and still life . His strong brushstrokes and his light, impressionistic technique present what is depicted in great plasticity and with a clearly defined mood.

Since Herrmann's pictorial conception no longer corresponded to the more modern aspirations after the First World War and he could no longer earn his living as a freelance artist, he decided in October 1933 to learn the craft of restorer in the restoration studio of the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe . In 1936 he established himself as a self-employed restorer; especially after the Second World War he was very successful with it; as a restorer he had many students.

The Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe owns a picture (autumn landscape, oil on canvas) by Philipp Herrmann.

Philipp Herrmann died on September 19, 1968 in Karlsruhe.
