Walter Conz

Walter Conz (born July 27, 1872 in Stuttgart , † May 13, 1947 in Überlingen ) was a German painter and etcher. He was a professor at the Karlsruhe Art Academy .

Life

Walter Conz, son of Gustav Conz , studied from 1890 at the Stuttgart Art Academy with Jakob Grünenwald and from 1891 to 1898 at the Academy in Karlsruhe with Ernst Schurth , Caspar Ritter , Gustav Schönleber and Count Leopold von Kalckreuth . He also attended their master classes with Schönleber and von Kalckreuth. At the same time, intensive studies of etching technique with Wilhelm Krauskopf , after whose illness he was commissioned in 1898 with the provisional management of the etching class.

From 1902 he was professor and head of the etching class at the art academy in Karlsruhe and until 1918 he was also a teacher at the painting school . Also in 1902 he began cooperation with the Karlsruhe majolica manufacture. A strong influence from Hans Thoma cannot be overlooked. He was a grand master of etching techniques with "firm yet delicate needle guidance" (Beringer). The artist achieved particular success in the landscape subject, where he preferred to create simple motifs which he translated into clear compositions. One of his master students was Wilhelm Hempfing . In 1933 Conz retired and moved to Überlingen on Lake Constance in 1935, where he died in 1947.
