Philipp Jakob Loutherbourg the Elder
Philipp Jakob Loutherbourg the Elder (born around 1698 in Basel ; died 1768 in Paris ) was a French engraver of Swiss origin.
Life
After his first artistic lessons, Loutherbourg went to Strasbourg , where he was a student in several workshops. In addition to portraits, Loutherbourg also created illustrations for several scientific works, e.g. B. the anatomical drawings for Heinrich Sigismund Stosch's medical dissertation.
Loutherbourg also married in Strasbourg, and his son, Philipp Jakob Loutherbourg the Younger , was born there.
From around 1725 Loutherbourg lived and worked in Wissembourg ( Alsace ). He then worked as a miniature painter and engraver at the court in Darmstadt . There is evidence that he lived in Paris from 1755. He died there in 1768 at the age of about 70.
