Philipp U. Heitz

Philipp U. Heitz (born April 10, 1939 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss pathologist .

From 1965, Heitz studied medicine at the University of Geneva with additional training in Freiburg (neuropathology), Basel (pathology) and at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and Hammersmith Hospital in London. In 1974 he completed his habilitation in Basel and in 1981 became associate professor and full professor for pathology in 1982 at the University of Basel , where he also headed the pathology department. In 1987 he became a full professor of pathology and head of the pathology department at the University of Zurich . In 2004 he retired.

Heitz dealt with the pathology of endocrine diseases, in particular neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, lungs and thyroid and multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN 1,2). In collaboration with other research groups, he succeeded in developing a classification of the tumors and assessment criteria for their behavior and genetics.

In 1995 he received the Schleiden Medal and in 2014 the Medal of Merit of the Leopoldina and in 2009 the Rudolf Virchow Medal of the German Society for Pathology . He became a member of the Leopoldina in 1989 and is a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . He is an honorary member of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences and the Swiss and European Society for Pathology. In 1983/84 he was President of the Swiss Society for Pathology, 1996/97 Chairman of the German Society for Pathology and 1994/95 President of the Endocrine Pathology Society.
