Johann Philipp Veith (born February 8, 1768 in Dresden ; † June 28, 1837 there ) was a German painter and engraver .

Philipp Veith grew up in poor circumstances and had to earn a living from a young age. He also worked as an assistant to a room painter and occasionally took drawing lessons at a school in Dresden. His drawing teacher gave him access to the Dresden Art Academy , where he became a student of Adrian Zingg in the subjects of engraving and drawing. In the course of his training, Veith developed a special inclination for the landscape subject, which should also determine his overall work.

From around 1790 Philipp Veith began to gain a foothold as an independent artist with oil paintings, but especially with his pictorial drawings. He was one of the early signs of Saxon Switzerland , which he hiked through with Karl August Engelhardt in the early 1790s . The description of this tour through the mountain landscape came out in the years 1794 and 1795 under the title "Mahlerische wanderings through Saxony" in Leipzig.

From 1798 Philipp Veith was a pensioner at the academy and created motifs for the Meissen porcelain factory . In 1802 he received an electoral Saxon travel grant, which enabled him to visit Switzerland, Northern Italy and Rome. In 1813/14 there was a second stay in Italy. Veith published his sheets in engravings and etchings and also remained active as a landscape artist. In 1817 he became a member of the Dresden Academy and in 1833 received a professorship at the institute.
