His father was the painter Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld . After attending school at the Blochmann School of Education (later Vitzhumanium ) and the Kreuzschule in Dresden, the municipal high school with Johannes Classen and Alfred Fleckeisen in Frankfurt am Main, he studied at the University of Göttingen and the University of Berlin . During his studies in Göttingen he became a member of the Brunsviga fraternity in 1859 . In Berlin he received his doctorate in 1864 with a thesis entitled Verborum collocatio Homerica quas habeat leges et qua utatur libertate . The philological state examination at the University of Leipzig was not possible for him because his doctorate was not recognized in Saxony .

Schnorr von Carolsfeld found a job at the Royal Public Library in Dresden, where he then, from 1887 to 1907 as director, spent his entire working life. From 1875 to 1880 he was also a city councilor. From 1892 to 1915 he worked for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie , to which he made numerous contributions. He died in Dresden in 1915 and was buried in the Old Annenfriedhof .
