Karl August Engelhardt, ( pseudonym: Richard Roos ; * February 4, 1768 in Dresden ; † January 28, 1834 ibid) was a German writer, archivist and educator.

Life

Born the son of a confectioner, he enrolled in 1786 at the University of Wittenberg to study theology. After passing his examination, he accepted a position as court master in 1790 , which he gave up again in 1794 to turn to literature. His collaboration with the artist Johann Philipp Veith at the time resulted in Mahler's walks through Saxony , which aroused interest in more remote landscapes such as the Elbe Sandstone Mountains or the Zittau Mountains .

On a recommendation from Johann Christoph Adelung , he had been an accessist from 1805 (i.e. an initially unpaid candidate in a kind of internship) in the Electoral Public Library ( Bibliotheca Electoralis Publica , from 1806 Royal Public Library ). One of his first tasks was the re-edition of the earth description of Electoral Saxony and the countries that belonged to it , which Engelhardt continued under the title Earth Description of the Kingdom of Saxony and published in 1807, which was begun by the god of gratitude Immanuel Merkel and remained unused after Merkel's death in 1798 . In 1810 he was employed as an assistant to the archivist at the secret war chancellery. After the death of his headmaster, he took over his position and became archivist for the secret war council at the War Administration Chamber of the Kingdom of Saxony. Was dissolved as this authority on December 1, 1831 he became Kriegsministerialarchivar and Secretary to the Ministry of War .

During his life Engelhardt wrote “on the side” writings for young people and for use in schools, especially on regional studies and regional history. From 1813 he published under the synonym Richard Roos. His poems are characterized by satirical wit and lightness.
