Philipp von Hesse (born July 10, 1810 in Berlin , † October 29, 1868 in Verney in Switzerland) was royal Prussian lieutenant general and most recently head of the regional administration .

His parents were the businessman and councilor Gustav Philipp von Hesse and his wife Anna Marie Barraud .

Life

He got his education at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Berlin . He enrolled in the University of Berlin on June 14, 1828 and began to study mathematics. But on September 2, 1828 he left the university and on October 16, 1828 became a gunner in the 2nd Artillery Brigade, where he joined the 2nd Cavalry Battery. From October 16, 1830 to September 30, 1831 he was posted to the United Artillery and Engineering School . During that time he was promoted to portepeef ensign on November 19, 1830 and to extra-budget second lieutenant on September 28, 1831. On October 24, 1832, he was appointed artillery officer with a patent on October 5, 1831. From October 5, 1834 to July 27, 1837 he was posted to the General War School . After his return he was detached from the trigonometric department of the General Staff in 1838 and promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on February 27, 1842. On April 3, 1845 he came to the General Staff and on March 17, 1846 he became a captain in the General Staff. He became battery chief on November 12, 1850 with a patent on February 27, 1844 in the 7th Artillery Regiment. On March 2, 1852 he became a major with a patent on April 11, 1851 in the General Staff. He was then transferred to the General Staff of the II. Army Corps on July 18, 1855 , promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on October 15, 1856, and reassigned to the General Staff on March 7, 1857. But on April 15, 1857 he was appointed head of department in the General Staff and conductor of the trigonometric department. On May 31, 1859 he was promoted to colonel, at the same time he became head of the 1st department and continued to be the conductor of the trigonometric department. On June 3, 1860, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd Class with Ribbon, and on October 18, 1861, the Order of the Crown, 3rd Class . In addition, on March 17, 1863, he received the character of major general and on March 17, 1864 a salary of 3000 thalers a year, and on June 25, 1864 he also received his patent as major general. On April 3, 1866 he was relieved of his position as head of department and left his position as head of regional triangulation to the officers of the army.

During the mobilization for the German war he was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff von Moltke on June 2, 1866 . On September 17, 1866, he was released from this position and was again head of the land registry. On September 20, 1866 he was given the character of Lieutenant General. He was already seriously ill when he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd Class with Oak Leaves on January 19, 1868 and was put up for retirement on September 26, 1868 . He died a short time later on October 29, 1868 in Verney, Switzerland.

In his assessment, General Wilhelm von Krauseneck wrote in 1847:

“So far, he has been largely occupied with trigonometric work. and in doing so, according to the inspector's judgment, has shown knowledge and skill. He endeavors to train himself for the other branches of the military service and can also become competent in this regard with continued sustained effort. He showed a lot of interest in practice trips. "

He also developed a range finder for the artillery.

He married Emma Hedwig Müller (* April 8, 1825 - March 2, 1900) in Stettin on January 12, 1857 , a daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Johann Friedrich Müller .
