Philippa Whitford (born December 24, 1958 in Belfast ) is a British politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Whitford was born in 1958 in the Northern Irish capital Belfast. She moved to Scotland with her family when she was ten . The doctor of medicine studied at the University of Glasgow . For her surgical training, Whitford first went to Belfast for a year and then continued it at various locations in the southwest of Scotland. In the early 1990s, she joined a medical aid unit in the Gaza Strip . Upon her return to Scotland, Whitford first worked in Aberdeen and then moved to the Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock . Whitford lives in Troon .

Political career

In the British general election in 2015 , Whitford ran for the SNP in the Central Ayrshire constituency . She stood up against Labor MP Brian Donohoe , who has represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since its inception in 2005 . After the SNP gained massive votes in these elections, Whitford achieved the highest percentage of votes and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. She is a member of the health committee despite losing votes, Whitford was able to maintain her mandate in the 2017 general election just ahead of the conservative challenger.
