David Hoyt Canary (born August 25, 1938 in Elwood , Indiana - † November 16, 2015 in Wilton , Connecticut ) was an American actor , best known for his roles in the television series Bonanza and All My Children .

life and career

David Canary, a great-grand-nephew of the legendary frontier woman Calamity Jane , was a successful football player at his high school in Massillon , Ohio , and later at the University of Cincinnati . Although he originally wanted to be a singer, he then turned to acting. As early as 1961, he drew attention to himself through appearances in the television series Search for Tomorrow , then he had a recurring role in the series Peyton Place . Canary only made film appearances sporadically, and when - for example in the westerns Man called him Hombre (1968) and Men of the Law (1975) - it mostly stayed with supporting roles. On television, however, he became known to a wide audience through his role as foreman "Candy" Canaday in the television series Bonanza . Between 1967 and 1973 he played this character in a total of 92 episodes. From the 1970s he appeared in numerous American soap operas . In the television series All My Children , he played the role of the devious Adam Chandler for almost 30 years and also his twin brother, the haphazard and fearful Stuart. Then, on a 2009 episode, Adam Chandler accidentally killed his brother.

David Canary received the Daytime Emmy Award five times for his appearances on All My Children between 1986 and 2001 . In addition to his film and television work, Canary also appeared several times as an actor in musicals and plays. His first marriage to Julie M. Anderson between 1965 and 1971, which resulted in a child, was divorced. Since 1982 he was married to Maureen Maloney; they had two children.

In his final years, David Canary lived in seclusion in Wilton, Connecticut, where he died on November 16, 2015 at the age of 77.
