Nicolet successfully completed his law degree at the University of Lausanne in 1978. In his spare time he sang in the pop group Sunflower, which he founded in 1975. After graduating, he worked at the cantonal court for two years.

In 1980 Nicolet switched to the daily newspaper 24 heures . There he worked as a journalist and reporter for opinion polls until 1992. From 1989 to 2006 he also created the archives of the Edipresse media group .
