Henri Rieben

Henri Rieben (born March 23, 1921 in Epalinges , Canton of Vaud ; † January 11, 2006 ibid) was a " Swiss European" and a pioneer for European integration.

Life

Henri Rieben was born in Epalinges in the canton of Vaud in 1921 as the son of farmers. He studied economics at the University of Lausanne , where he joined the connection Valdesia joined. In 1952 he received his doctorate . In 1957 he became the first full professor of the newly established chair for questions of European integration in Lausanne - the first of its kind in Europe. Rieben founded the Institute for European Research there. In the 1950s and 1960s, Henri Rieben worked closely with the French statesman and European visionary Jean Monnet , who, together with Robert Schumann, is considered one of the founding fathers of the European Community (EC) and today's European Union (EU).

In 1978 Rieben founded the " Jean Monnet for Europe " foundation (Jean Monnet pour l 'Europe). This foundation provides scientists and students with archival material on the founding process and the development of the European Community. There is a publicly accessible media library with 8000 photographs of Jean Monnet and European integration, interviews with European pioneers, old film material about Monnet and his life's work as well as a collection of current television and radio programs about Europe. Around twelve tons of documents left behind by Monnet are stored and managed in the Foundation's archives. The "Jean Monnet for Europe" foundation publishes, among other things, so-called "red booklets" on European issues.

As General Secretary of the Action Committee for a United Europe and President of the Foundation "Jean Monnet for Europe", he received several honors, including in 1973 the gold medal for European merit and in 1990 the Freedom Prize . Henri Rieben holds the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and was awarded a Knight of the Legion of Honor in France . During the civil war in Angola , Henri Rieben was charged with mediating between the International Committee of the Red Cross and UNITA .

In addition to these commitments, Rieben was, among other things, a co-founder of the Vaudois Economic Development Agency in 1958 and a member of the management committee of the 1964 Expo in Lausanne.

The documentary filmmaker Philippe Nicolet is currently shooting a documentary about rubs on behalf of the "Jean Monnet for Europe" foundation.

Rieben died of complications from cancer .
