Philippe Vorbe (born September 14, 1947 in Port-au-Prince ) is a former Haitian football player and current coach .

Career

society

Vorbe played for two years for the now defunct New York Generals club , played 14 games and scored one goal. In 1973 he switched to Violette AC , which he also looked after as a coach after his career ended.

National team

Vorbe was seeded in the midfield of Haiti and made regular appearances. He was in action during the entire qualification for the 1974 World Cup and reached the finals with his country, which is still considered Haiti's only participation in a World Cup.

Vorbe was also a regular at the 1974 World Cup and played all three preliminary round matches. Vorbe is best known for his remarkable presentation against Italy in the first group game: Italy dominated the game as expected, but failed to score in the first half. Shortly after the start of the second half, Italy stormed towards the Haitian goal again, a failed cross was headed to Vorbe by captain Wilner Nazaire . Vorbe saw the big gap in the Italian defense and played a long, flat through pass directly to Emmanuel Sanon , who then scored the 1-0. However, the sensation was averted by Italy, they turned up the pace and won 3-1.

Trivia

  • Because of his light skin color (Vorbe is white) he was also called the White Devil .
  • His nephew Sebastien Vorbe was also a professional footballer.
