The Philippines Halsbandeule ( Otus megalotis ) is an owl from the genus of scops owl . Their occurrence is limited to the Philippines .

description

The length is 23 to 28 centimeters and the weight 180 to 310 grams, making it the largest species of the genus. The female is larger and about thirty grams heavier than the male. The plumage of the red morph is light reddish brown to yellow brown. The relatively large scribbles form five or six distinct bands on the red to yellow-brown elytra. The underside is gray with dark arrow-shaped shaft lines and some cross markings. The face is surrounded by a collar of whitish or yellowish feathers with a dark tip. The gray morph has a gray-brown basic tone with whitish eyebrows that extend to the feather ears. The eyes are warm orange-brown, the feather ears are long, the beak is horn-colored. The legs are feathered up to the base of the pale flesh-colored, yellowish brown or whitish gray toes.

In the past, the Philippines-necked owl was set to the Indian scops owl ( Otus bakkamoena ), from which it differs particularly in its voice.

Way of life

It inhabits dense tropical rainforest and secondary forests from 300 to 1600 meters, occasionally up to 2000 meters. The food consists of insects. The voice is an explosive series of three to six ascending tones with a slight pitch.

distribution

The nominate form O. m. megalotis inhabits Luzon , Marinduque and Catanduanes . OM everetti in Samar , Leyte , Dinagat , Bohol , Mindanao and Basilan is smaller, O. m. nigrorum on Negros with a strong red-brown head and whiter underside is even smaller.
